What is an emergency? Walk-in admission is for emergencies. An emergency is: current documents from a court, government agency or subsidized landlord that require a response within four (4) business days; a judicial or administrative hearing within four (4) working days; a legal period of four (4) working days; a lock-out, the cessation of public service or the expulsion of self-help; an imminent extrajudicial execution within ten (10) calendar days; or a recent incident of serious domestic violence. If you have a legal issue that needs to be addressed and you are currently receiving food stamps or have a low income, use Super Lawyers to find an experienced legal advisor/pro bono lawyer. The Legal Aid Justice Center provides free legal counsel to low-income families throughout Central Virginia and vulnerable children, low-wage immigrants, institutionalized individuals, and other vulnerable populations throughout the state. Through legal representation in civil lawsuits, community education and advocacy at the national level, legal aid strives to alleviate our clients` immediate problems while addressing the systemic issues that keep people in poverty. CVLAS has 3 offices throughout Central Virginia to help clients meet their legal needs. While legal representation cannot be guaranteed, every effort is made to ensure that clients receive the legal advice they need when dealing with civil matters. Often, there is a maximum salary that a client can earn while working with a litigation lawyer/pro bono lawyer. Households whose income does not exceed 187.5% of poverty may be accepted in certain situations.
Households must also have few resources. Seniors (60 years of age or older) can get legal advice, regardless of their finances. Applicants must also meet citizenship requirements. Provides free civil (non-criminal) legal advice and representation to low-income people in the areas of bankruptcy, civil rights, consumer rights, debtors` rights, disability, domestic violence, elderly law, employment, family, foreclosure, health, housing, public benefits, supplementary security income (SSI) and unemployment benefits. Representation and/or legal advice are free of charge for the client. However, customers are responsible for all legal costs incurred. Interpreters are available for all non-English speaking clients. The Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) does not process all support requests, but never charges a fee for its services. CVLAS does not deal with criminal matters, traffic, personal injury, professional misconduct, property damage or cases that may result in attorneys` fees where a lawyer may receive fees from the other party or recovery. Please have all documents related to your case ready, if necessary, for easy reference.
