Ottawa Law Firms Hiring Students

Our summer student program runs from early May to mid-August. The program begins with a week of orientation, training sessions and social activities. The guidance and education we offer is designed to provide our students with the tools and skills to go from being a law student to succeeding in a law firm. We view our internship program as a natural extension of our summer program and anticipate that most, if not all, of our summer students will return to the internship with us. The number of summer students we hire is therefore the number of interns we would like to have. The company has developed a comprehensive training and orientation program for its summer students to ensure they are well equipped to work in the company. This is a two-week program that is given at the beginning of your summer with us. You will receive ratings and feedback throughout the internship program and a formal evaluation at the end of each internship. We know that feedback goes both ways; Students are always welcome to ask questions, concerns or comments. Summer interviews are held annually in February, in accordance with guidelines published by the University of Ottawa`s Centre for Career and Professional Development. We follow the process and timeline established by Ottawa-area law firms for student recruitment. Soloway Wright also participates in the OCI (on-campus interviews) process for the University of Ottawa, Queen`s University, Osgoode Hall Law School (York University), University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, Western University, University of Windsor and McGill University. We also welcome applications from other law schools.

Soloway Wright also pays on a case-by-case basis for students who participate in continuing education events throughout the year. In addition, students are invited and encouraged to participate in all continuing education and learning dinners organized by the company`s various practice groups. We pride ourselves on a collegial and supportive work environment. We work with first names, have an open-door policy, and are committed to a casual business dress code. We are committed to providing our law students with all aspects of the firm`s legal practice, as well as a student experience that meets the individual needs and interests of each student. Equality, inclusion and respect are rooted in Soloway Wright`s history and culture. Students are valued members of our team and work directly with partners and collaborators. Summer students are paired with one-on-one mentor lawyers who help the student integrate into the fabric of the firm and secure meaningful career opportunities. Mentors accompany and support their mentees throughout the summer.

Fasken`s student orientation program gives you the right tools to succeed from the start. You will be introduced to permanent contacts and other students, trained in our IT and knowledge management systems and will have the opportunity to ask many questions. Fasken Compensation pays students at rates comparable to other national law firms. Your BVG registration and internship fees will be covered by the company and you will receive your regular salary during the bar admission course. This wide range of experiences helps students become complete lawyers. Our company has a proud tradition and history in Ottawa dating back to 1879. We consider our students, past and present, to be an integral part of this tradition. We attach great importance to our students gaining the necessary experience to become great lawyers. We are perhaps the only law firm in Ottawa that can boast that all the lawyers in our firm started with us when they were students. When we say we know how important students are to our business, we mean it.

Our lawyers appreciate the opportunity to act as mentors and are available to answer students` questions. During the summer and semesters, students receive feedback in a variety of ways, including directly from lawyers on their day-to-day work and more formally at exam meetings. Our internship committee will regularly review your progress and is available to discuss professional and general issues with you. Given the nature of our active litigation practice, we often have several processes per year. Our intention is to make exam preparation and attendance an integral part of our trainee experience. Our students gain hands-on experience before and during exams. They are not just there to observe; They are involved in every step of the process. We hire two interns each year.

Preferably, these students plan to live and practice in Ottawa after being called to the bar. Interns are assigned to our practicum director, who provides informal mentoring, advice and feedback throughout the practicum process. Students will also find that they are supervised by all our lawyers. Application deadlines for articling are set by the Law Society of Ontario. Soloway Wright LLP is pleased to invite students participating in the 2L 2023 Summer Recruitment to one of our upcoming virtual coffee discussions. During the virtual coffee and-learns, students will have the opportunity to meet with lawyers and current students from our firm and get to know Soloway Wright before the application deadline. The coffee estates will host a maximum of six students with two lawyers or one lawyer and one articling student or summer student so students can see what Soloway Wright has to offer its prospective students. The internship semester begins with a week of training and social activities. The training program is designed to inform our students about the training and orientation they received during their summer and prepare them for a successful art semester. Given the size of our firm, students benefit from an active and hands-on experience that allows for close interaction between clients, staff and lawyers.

Students are regularly invited to attend client interviews, conduct legal research, and draft legal documents such as application documents, mediation notes, and pre-trial briefs. Our students also have the opportunity to observe all aspects of the process process, including discoveries, mediations, motions and processes. This allows our students to experience the results of their hard work and see their value in litigation. In addition, you will be assigned two staff members who you can meet informally once a month to discuss your experience, ask questions and receive advice. Finally, members of the internship committee are available to answer students` questions and provide feedback throughout the summer and internship. Articling students must complete the Law Society of Upper Canada`s Law Society of Upper Canada`s Law Society Licensing Process. You will receive two weeks` salary and will have time to focus on your studies each week of the process. We strive to respond to inquiries about our company and student programs in a timely manner during the application and interview phase. We also welcome communications of a general nature (e.g., thank you messages); However, due to the volume of messages we receive during this time, we may not be able to acknowledge or respond to them as we prioritize specific student questions.

In all our communications, we respect the employment contract of Ottawa law firms and, where applicable, the rules of the Law Society. For more information about our program, including hiring information, compensation and other relevant details, please visit our profile on the PNLA website. As with our summer program, interns are an integral part of our team and work directly with partners and collaborators. Interns are paired with an internship director who supervises them throughout their practicum session. As for the internship program, we see it as a natural extension of our summer program. The number of summer students we hire is therefore the number of interns we would like to have. We expect all of our summer students to return to internships with us. Students are invited to inquire about whether we will be involved in recruiting external interns. When we hire externally, we interview candidates according to timelines set by the Law Society of Ontario. Check out testimonials from some of the law students and lawyers who started in our student program: Over the summer, students receive continuing education, formal and informal feedback. Students are invited and encouraged to participate in all aspects of corporate life, including social events, inclusion and diversity initiatives, and community and pro bono programs.
