Cook County Circuit Court The presiding judge issued an order to defer civil and criminal cases for a period of 30 days from Tuesday, March 17, 2020 to April 15, 2020. All courthouses will remain open during these 30 days. However, as clerks who do not need to be in courtrooms are encouraged to work remotely, some services may not be available. Panelists will discuss changes or their absence in the justice system and the community as a whole – one year after the murder of George Floyd and just weeks after the guilty verdict was announced. These barriers are sometimes referred to as “extrajudicial sentences” because they can affect people who have been arrested and convicted for decades after serving sentences imposed by the courts. CLHA interns play an invaluable role in our joint work to remove barriers to justice in the criminal justice system. Our internships all last at least 10 weeks and take place in spring, summer and autumn. All our internship requests are published in our Careers tab via BambooHR and are displayed below. Not all of our internships are paid, but we are committed to working with our interns to help them secure third-party financing or external loans for their time at the ACGL. Sometimes we have legal internship opportunities for students or people who are not students. When this is the case, we indicate this in the app ads. Hearing dates should be extended 30 days after the original trial date. For example, a hearing scheduled for March 23, 2020 will be postponed to April 22, 2020. Appeal from the Cook County Delisting and Sealing Court The presiding judge of the expungement court appeal has suspended the removal and sealing appeals at 2650 S. California Avenue for the remainder of March until April 20, 2020. The call will continue on April 21, 2020. Hearings that were scheduled during this period will be postponed. Hearings in suburban districts were also suspended for at least 30 days. Please contact the Clerk`s office again to receive your new hearing date. Volunteers will help clients of the service end extrajudicial sentences by meeting virtually to explain the eligibility of their criminal records for deletion and sealing. Consultations are very effective for our clients who, in many cases, are prevented from finding suitable employment due to their criminal history. In this way, volunteers can feel that they are making a difference by mitigating systemic racism and the negative effects of the criminal justice system, one help desk client after another.
