Our strategic litigation work combines our legal expertise with that of Amnesty International`s researchers, activists and lawyers throughout the judicial process. Kyle has many years of experience in human rights, intergovernmental and organizational management. Previously, he was responsible for programme support and management of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. His career of more than 30 years at the United Nations also includes time devoted to humanitarian operations and peacekeeping. This was preceded by three years of an NGO that took care of displaced Cambodians at the Thai border. He holds degrees in International Management and Foreign Service. Prior to joining Amnesty International, she worked in the public sector for more than 10 years and was legal advisor to the National and City of Buenos Ares. She has also worked as a professor and researcher and as a consultant for UNDP and UNESCO. Amnesty International has advocated on a variety of issues, including: torture and other ill-treatment; international justice; Detention; the rights of refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants; Rights; censorship and freedom of expression; maternal health and reproductive rights; the death penalty; Discrimination; and economic, social and cultural rights. Carlos Lopez joined ICJ in January 2008 to lead the Business and Human Rights Programme. Carlos worked for six years at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in various capacities and positions, including in the areas of rule of law and democracy, economic and social rights and the right to development.
Previously, he worked for the ICJ (1998-1999), the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva (2000) and for several international human rights organizations as well as for national human rights NGOs in his country, Peru. He holds a doctorate and a master`s degree in international law (Graduate Institute of International Studies of the University of Geneva) and a degree in sociology. He holds a law degree from the Catholic University of Peru. Rohan Hewavisenti, Amnesty International`s Chief Financial Officer. He oversees financial management at the International Secretariat and is responsible for supporting and promoting financial literacy and organizational capacity. His portfolio also includes legal advice, information and technology, security and workspace services. Ira Lefton is Head of Legal and Political Affairs at Amnesty International USA. He joined the organization in 2019 after advising Amnesty International USA continuously since 2005 as a partner at two AmLaw 200 law firms, Reed Smith LLP and Eckert Seamans LLC. In addition to his years of supporting Amnesty International USA on various governance, contract, intellectual property and other issues, he has advised many other national and regional non-profit organizations on various issues.
With over forty years of experience as a commercial litigation lawyer, Lefton has developed expertise in addressing and resolving the challenges businesses face in all aspects of their operations. Lefton received his B.A. from Yale University and his J.D. from the University of North Carolina. He lives in Philadelphia. PA with her husband, interior designer. Support for victims of human rights violations and the protection of human rights defenders often involve participation in litigation. They have legal drafting and analytical skills, for example through experience in the application of international law. Anand Mishra is Acting Director of Amnesty International USA. Anand is also AIUSA`s National Director of Marketing and Communications. In his roles, Anand leads the teams responsible for AIUSA`s programs, the Silicon Valley initiative, and all external communications.
Anand has led marketing and communications for international non-profit organizations for over 20 years, including previous positions at the International Budget Partnership, World Resources Institute, World Wildlife Fund, and The Nature Conservancy. Anand works out of AIUSA`s Washington, DC office. Our goal is simple: to put an end to human rights violations. Until mid-2013, he was acting head of the refugee and migrant rights team at Amnesty International`s International Secretariat in London. Livio was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2007 and is an honorary member of Garden Court Chambers in London, where he worked as a lawyer specialising in asylum and immigration, criminal law and public law until 2010. Prior to joining the Bar, Livio worked at Amnesty International`s International Secretariat, where he held various positions since the mid-90s, including as a research associate until 2007.
Livio holds an L.L.M. in International Human Rights Law from Queen`s University Belfast, Northern Ireland.
