With a blood ethanol level below 50 mg / dl or a concentration of 0.05%, a person is not considered intoxicated. The possible critical value for blood ethanol is >300 mg/dl. [4] An estimate for blood alcohol levels would be that each ounce of whiskey, 12 ounces of beer or 5 ounces of wine increases blood alcohol levels by 15-25 mg/dl. The peak is reached between 30 minutes (when consumed empty) to 3 hours after the last drink. The metabolism is between 10 and 30 mg/dl/hour and depends on a variety of factors, including liver size. [3] The degree of intoxication (and peak) is affected by age, sex, weight, the presence of food in the stomach, the number of drinks per hour, the alcohol content of the drink (evidence), and the presence of other drugs that interact with alcohol. [10] In general, women have a higher peak than men, partly due to the fact that women have a higher fat content (and lower total body water) than men. The lower amount of DHA found in the stomach and therefore in metabolism may also contribute to sex-related differences in ethanol concentration. [11] A police officer may ask you to take a breathalyzer test if you are suspected of driving while intoxicated. If you refuse to take a breathalyzer test or think the test was not accurate, you may request a blood alcohol test or be asked to take a blood alcohol test. Table 1.2: Physiological effects of different blood alcohol levels Extensive research has shown that the effect of alcohol on humans depends on the concentration of alcohol in the blood. With a very low blood alcohol level, people usually experience relaxation and mild euphoria and some loss of inhibition or shyness. However, blood alcohol levels that exceed the legal limit for driving in the United States can lead to significant impairment of motor skills.
A blood alcohol level of 0.3% or more can lead to complete loss of consciousness and a blood alcohol level of 0.5% or more can even lead to death (Table 1.2). Drinking alcohol on an excessive occasion can lead to alcohol poisoning which, if not treated promptly, can be fatal. Celik et al. reported that post-mortem blood alcohol levels ranged from 136 to 608 mg/dl in 39 people who died from alcohol overdose. Most of the deceased were male [5]. The mechanism of death from alcohol poisoning is usually attributed to paralysis of the respiratory and circulatory centers of the brain, which causes suffocation. WebMD:. Alcohol. Available at: www.webmd.com/mental-health/alcohol-abuse/blood-alcohol?page=3. Tube: dependent on the hospital. Can use a serum separator tube (contains a clot activator and a serum separator organ; also known as the tiger top tube), a red tube, a gray tube or a green tube (plasma). Please note that the serum or plasma concentration is approximately 1.2 times higher than that of whole blood.
Once a health care provider has taken your blood sample, they send it to a lab for analysis. Once the test results are received, the person or supplier who ordered the test will share the results with you. In hospital clinical laboratories, alcohol is determined in plasma or serum samples, not in whole blood. This must be taken into account when using clinical laboratory results in criminal cases such as drunk driving. Since the water content of serum and plasma (~92% w/w) is higher than in an equal blood volume (~80% w/w), ethanol concentrations are also higher. Direct measurements have shown that the average ethanol distribution ratio between serum (plasma) and whole blood is 1.15:1, with a range of 1.10:1 to 1.20:1 (Charlebois et al., 1996). In addition, clinical laboratories report ethanol concentrations in mmol/L, where 21.7 mmol/L = 100 mg/100 mL, or 0.1% w/v. Blood tests are a very common and essential part of medical testing and screening. There is a very low risk of blood tests. You may have mild tenderness or bruising at the site of the blood draw, but this usually resolves quickly. Using medications (the law does not distinguish between prescription, over-the-counter or illegal drugs) that interfere with your ability to drive safely is illegal.
